In 2020, racism was once more a serious matter on the agenda in Norwegian society. With the #blacklivesmatter – movement, increased media focus and two new national action plans, those of us who believed that racism didn’t exist in Norway had to realise that both everyday – and structural racism, unfortunately, are quite common.
Everybody should have the same rights irrespective of ethnicity, religion and view on life, and the Equality and Ant-discrimination Act protects against discrimination based on these factors. Still, statistics and research on equality and living conditions show that e.g. that Sami and other national minorities as well persons with an immigrant background suffer discrimination in several arenas (Bufdir, 2021).
Courses
The Centre for Gender and Equality works to promote diversity and to fight against discrimination and racism. We do this through interdisciplinary cooperation, open arrangements, regional dialogue meetings and interactive courses. Please contact us for a non-binding offer of workshops, seminars or courses on racism, prejudice and discrimination.
Projects
Religion in a modern time: dialogue and debate on Faith’s opportunities and limitations in a democracy
Regional dialogue meetings on racism and discrimination
In cooperation with the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Family Affairs and the Ministry of Culture we arrange on an annual basis regional dialogue meetings in the Agder region, based on the Government’s Action Plan against Racism and Discrimination on the Grounds of Ethnicity and Religion 2020 – 2023. The aim of the dialogue meeting on racism in the Autumn of 2020 was to establish a local basis and dialogue across the Agder region. In 2021, we arrange a dialogue meeting on hostility towards Muslims and Islamophobia in Agder.
MA scholarships
We announce scholarships to UiA students who will write their theses on themes related to equality and diversity. We need more knowledge about racism and discrimination due to ethnicity and religion, and therefore wish that more students write their theses within this research area.
