"We want to do something nice for students and staff at UiA, but the concerts are open to everyone. It is a great way to show the diversity we have here at the department", says organiser Mariam Kharatyan.

Popular internationally

Kharatyan has recently taken over responsibility for the lunch concerts, and has big plans for the coming autumn.

"We want to further develop these concerts here at UiA. At international music institutions, it is very popular among students and professors to go to lunch concerts, and I consider it very important to develop this at UiA. We have fantastic facilities, instruments and a high level of music students, and the audience will have a full concert experience with stage lighting and acoustics", says Kharatyan.

Important experience for students

For students, it is an important part of the learning to perform their pieces in front of an audience, as they become more comfortable and receive useful training in performance.

"They get to test how the pieces they have worked with and rehearsed on in a concert situation. There are many new aspects when students are on stage in front of an audience, and it is a lot about how to perform and interpret the music compositions, and to share that music with the audience", says Kharatyan.

 A classical music break

Kharatyan thinks these concerts are an important and welcomed time-out in an otherwise busy everyday work life.

"We want to give the audience a fantastic musical experience and we have many talented students. I want to encourage everyone to take a break from everyday work life and enjoy classical music", says Kharatyan.

Varied elements in lunch concerts

At the Department of Classical Music, students can choose between the specialisations in main instrument in the bachelor’s programme in Classical Music and the master’s programme in Classical Music, as well as studying in two main areas/two contrasting disciplines within the bachelor’s programme in Classical Music. Students from both specialisations will participate in the concerts, and there will be performances of various compositions from different classical music eras, genres and styles.

"We have students who play various instruments such as piano, violin, cello, double bass, clarinet, flute and voice. Some will perform solo, and others in ensembles. The students are also free to chose the compositions they want to play", says Kharatyan, whom will also perform with some of the students.
