The Department has master’s and PhD programs in Mathematics Education, 1-year Programme, Bachelor's and Master's Programme in Mathematics, and is responsible for mathematics in bachelor’s programs in Economics, Bioengineering and Biology. The Department also provides mathematics teaching in all the University's teacher education programs; Pre-school education, Primary teacher education level 1-7 and 5-10, Advanced teacher education level 8-13 and the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education. The Department offers a wide range of in-service education for teachers of mathematics. 

The department leads MatRIC, the Center of Excellence for Mathematics Education (SFU). 

The department has research groups in Pure and Applied Mathematical Analysis (PAMAR) and in Mathematics Education (MERGA). MERGA has been awarded status as one of six priority research centers at University of Agder.

The department leads the national graduate school in Mathematics and Science Education, MaScE.
