Obligations of the supervisor and the candidate in connection with supervision

Ethical guidelines for supervision at University of Agder

The supervisor(s) must:

• Offer advice about formulating and limiting the theme and the problem.
• Discuss and assess hypotheses and methods
• Discuss results and their interpretation
• Discuss the structure and mode of presentation (outline, linguistic form, documentation etc.)
• Assist in finding specialist literature and data sources (libraries, archives, etc.)
• Help to introduce the candidate to relevant academic environments
• Keep oriented about the real progress of the candidate’s work and assess this in relation to the planned progress
• Give the candidate supervision in research-ethical issues linked to the thesis

The PhD candidate must:

• Actively seek advice from the supervisor(s) concerning the research project and the work on the thesis.
• Upon agreement with the supervisor(s) and in accordance with the project description, submit drafts of parts of the thesis to the supervisor(s).
• Complete the training component in accordance with the progress plan
• Comply with the research ethical principles of the academic field
