Research data is a precious resource that comes in many forms and formats, from statistics to images, programming code and ancient texts. Making this research data accessible to others is a central contribution to making science more transparent and reproducible. Increasingly research funders and publishers require free and easy access to research data. Below you find services and information on how to do this. Get in contact to discuss any related questions.
Publishing Data
Publishing your research data allows others to access and reuse it. Numerous services are available for this purpose – UiA’s library offers access to the repository DataverseNO, see the deposit guidelines for advice on the steps involved in this process.
Alternatively, the CERN laboratory offers the repository Zenodo to researchers from all disciplines. For a comprehensive overview of the repositories available to the different academic disciplines you can consult the service re3data.org.
Data Management Plan
A data management plan is a tool for managing research data. It describes how data will be managed during a research project and after project completion. The purpose is to evaluate different aspects of the handling and managing of research data, including data collection and generation, processing, analyses, documentation, storage, and sharing. It ensures that your research data can be reused and understood in the future.
Various templates for Data Management Plans are available:
Microsoft Teams – widely used for collaboration, communication and data storage at UiA.
Storing sensitive data – TSD is a service for collecting, analysing and storing sensitive research data in compliance with Norwegian legislation.
NIRD Data Storage - Sigma2 offers the NIRD Data Storage service, meant for data volumes above 10 TB. Access to the services is granted upon proposal submission based on a set of conditions for access. The service’s users must contribute to the cost involved.
Finding data
A selection of Norwegian and international services providing access to research data:
Helsedata - access to Norwegian health data, providing access to health registries, medical quality registers, surveys, biobanks and socio-economic data.
Felles datakatalog - Norwegian National Data Catalog with descriptions of datasets, concepts, APIs and information models.
DataCite - international meta-search providing access to data from more than 2.500 repositories.
Re3data.org - provides an overview of the research data repository landscape, with subject classification.
Sharing data
In case you want to share large files with person’s outside of UiA, you can use the service FileSender. Upload large files and give access to specific persons. Externals can upload files via a “guest voucher”. Login via Feide, see here for more details.
Secure sending of data – in case you need to email sensitive or confidential data to another person, the file needs to be encrypted. See this guide from UiA for the necessary steps.
Conducting surveys
Nettskjema is a tool for designing and conducting online surveys, developed and operated by University of Oslo. It is a flexible service that can be used for surveys and data collection, complying with Norwegian data safety legislation.
SurveyXact is tool to conduct questionnaire-based surveys – allowing to design and distribute questionnaires, to monitor and manage data collection and to analyse the results.
Students and researchers who are going to process personal data in a research project, need to notify NSD (Norsk Senter for Forskningsdata). The notification must be sent at least 30 days before data collection begins. If you are collecting anonymous data only, NSD does not need to be notified. Personal data is any data that can be linked to a person, including voice recordings.
