This is a joint seminar by the Department of Global Development and Planning at The Faculty of Social Sciences, UiA, NFU - Norwegian Association For Development Research and The Strømme Foundation (Strømmestiftelsen).

Context

Global debates on gender equality are highly polarized and marked by colliding discourses. In both the global South and North promoters of gender equality are being accused of “ideological colonisation” imposing western liberal ideas, while conservative values are seen as a threat to human rights. In 2018 the UN Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights (OHCHR) published a special report on the backlash against women’s rights and the very concept of gender and gender equality. Anti-gender campaigns started in the 1990s and the trans-national movement has become increasingly influential the last decade. The backlash takes its form as attacks on legal instruments, education and activists promoting gender equality.

In this seminar we discuss how diverging and polarized understandings of gender equality affect research, policy, and practice in international development. How do different perspectives on gender equality challenge the dialogue and cooperation across contexts?
