15 November from 13-16, we are celebrating the release of two books about institutional ethnography, which are authored and edited by UiA scholars. Institutional ethnography is a methodology for “investigating the social” originally developed by the feminist scholar and sociologist Dorothy E. Smith. Both books are in Norwegian, but the launch will be in English.
The books are:
Institusjonell etnografi. En innføring [Institutional ethnography. An introduction] authored by Ann Christin E. Nilsen from the University of Agder and Janne Paulsen Breimo from Nord University (published in March 2023)
Erfaringer med institusjonell etnografi [Experiences with institutional ethnography] edited by May-Linda Magnussen and Ann Christin E. Nilsen from the University of Agder (published in September 2023).
The launch will start with a short presentation of the two books, lead by Janne Lund from the University of Agder. Then, Eric Kimathi, Bård Bertelsen and Siv Schrøder from the University of Agder will say a little bit about the chapters they wrote for Erfaringer med institusjonell etnografi, and discuss how they benefitted from using institutional ethnography. The discussion will be lead by May-Linda Magnussen. Ann Christin E. Nilsen will then talk about analysis in institutional ethnography, based on Institusjonell etnografi. En innføring, before Órla Murray from Durham University in the UK talks about the role of texts in institutional ethnography. The book launch ends with a discussion about the importance of contextualizing institutional ethnography between Morena Tartari from Babeș-Bolyai University in Romania and Ann Christin E. Nilsen.
The arrangement will be on the second floor of the university library at campus Kristiansand, in room D2 023. After the launch, we invite all participants to a reception with bubbles and snacks in the top floor of the H-building. We also invite those who are interested to join us for food/drinks somewhere in the city centre of Kristiansand at 18 (to be paid for individually).
This event is hosted by the research group on institutional ethnography at UiA.
Please sign up before 14 November if you want to participate.
