We get a lot of questions about two-step authentication and here you will find the most common ones.
Does it cost anything to receive an SMS for two-step authnetication?
When you receive an SMS from Microsoft with a code for authentication, you are notified that you may be charged for the message or data use:
Use verification code xxxxxx for Microsoft authenticationMSG & Data rates may apply
Microsoft does not charge you for the SMS sent to you upon authentication, but your telephone operator may charge you according to your subscription. For example, your telecom operator may charge for sending SMS when you are abroad.
The same goes for authentication with the Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator app. As long as you are connected to a wireless network, there will be no additional data costs, but if you are not connected to a wireless network, your telephone operator may charge you for using the network.
How to add alternative method of authentication?
If you have not already added an alternative approval method, we recommend that you do so. You then log in to the settings page and select "Add method".
In the drop-down list, select "Alternate phone" and press "Add".
You will then see a dialog box where you can enter your phone number. Remember to enter the correct country code. Press «Next».
You will then be called to test that you have entered the correct telephone number and asked to press #.
Press «Finish».

Which methods of autnetications is available for two-step authentication?
There are several ways to accept 2-step verification. We recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile phone.
You can also choose to receive a code via SMS to your mobile phone.
By "add method", you choose to add authentication methods - we recommend that you have both the Microsoft Authenticator app and Alternative Phone as authentication methods. (See How to add an alternative authentication method? For a more detailed description).
By changing the "Default login method", you select which method you want to use by default.
If you are unable to log on through your authentication method(s), contact UiA Help with valid ID at hand.
If you have a Norwegian D-number (11 digits), you can reset your two-factor authentication on the button below. Log into the form in the top corner through ID-porten.
What is two-factor authentication? Two-factor authentication is an additional level of security together with username and password.
It can be compared to a door that has two locks, one key lock and one codelock, where you must have both the key and the code to open the door.
Even if the key (password) should be lost, unauthorized persons will not be able to open the door without having the code.
Why two-factor authentication? Two-factor authentication makes your data considerably less vulnerable to identity theft.
All employees at UiA have had a mandatory two-factor login since autumn 2019.
How often do you have to log in? You don't have to log in with two-factor authentication every time. Once logged in, there can be a duration of 30 days per service.
