SE-408-1 Microeconomics

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to apply her knowledge to analyze competition problems from a microeconomic perspective being aware of the merits as well as the limits of the analytical tools and the key concepts used in the discipline. The student should also have problem solving capacities when facing different classes of microeconomic problems:
- general equilibrium
- welfare theory
- game theory
- market structures and competition
- choice under uncertainty
- asymmetric information
- adverse selection and moral hazard
- economic growth, trade flows and the functioning of the capital market
The lectures start with an overview of general equilibrium and welfare theory and characteristics of the main market structures including markets with perfect competition and imperfect competition. After an introduction to the basics of game theory, the course then proceeds with questions related to markets and competition policy. The course covers elements from the microeconomics analysis of choice under uncertainty, the closely related issue of asymmetric information and discusses market failure, adverse selection and moral hazard. Within this framework we discuss economic growth, business cycles, trade flows and the functioning of the capital market.
Lectures and group work 4-5 hours per week.
Approved compulsory assignment. Furter information will be given in Fronter.
Mandatory assignments (40% of final grade); 3-hour final examination (60% of final grade). Graded marks.
