Summer School 2009
The Nordic Graduate School in Mathematics Education sent out an invitation in January 2009 for doctoral students to participate in a summer school in September 2009. We got very positive feedback and many students have sent a letter informing us that they would like to participate.
Now it is time to apply. Thus we are sending some more information about the summer school.
The programme will start on Monday September 21, at 14.00 and it will end at 15.00 on Saturday September 26, 2006. Arrival will be expected on Monday the 21st.
The main components of the programme are
- plenary lectures (including discussion) by the group leaders and invited guests
- working groups led by senior researchers, where participating students present different aspects of their own research and have it discussed in the group (this is the major component of the programme)
- workshops where specific themes are treated
- informal meetings between senior researchers and /or students to discuss own research education
- social events and excursion
Members of the board of the Nordic Graduate School and invited researchers will be managing the work and available for informal personal discussions.
The group leaders in the summer school 2007 will be Mogens Niss and Morten Blomhøj from Roskilde University and we are waiting for response from further invited group leasers. They are all well known and distinguished researchers in mathematics education.
Each working group will have a group leader (one of the senior researchers) that guides the work in the group, gives input to issues about research questions, choice of theory, methods, analysis and results for each student. Participating students are required to write a summary of their research project (about 5-8 pages), which will be made available to all in the same group before the summer school starts. Each doctoral student will get the opportunity to present her/his work and will have it thoroughly discussed by the group. This part of the programme has proved a very useful experience in earlier summer schools.
The groups will as far as possible be formed according to students’ interests around a few themes. Thus we need to know the research area for each participant in advance so that these groups can be formed. Such themes could be for example
- Problem-solving
- Curriculum and textbooks
- The role of proofs in mathematics education
- Attitudes and beliefs in mathematics education
- The use of technology in mathematics education
- Teaching and teacher education
The themes will be adjusted to meet the wishes and needs of those participating in the summer school.
Our intention is to create a supportive and stimulating community so that you all experience good exchange of ideas and creative feed-back on your own work.
The summer school will take place in Søminestationen in Holbæck. Accommodation will be organised there and we will also be able to use all the other facilities of this part of the Roskilde University localities. Accommodation will be mostly in double rooms. We have access to a number of double rooms (very few single rooms) and in order for us to be able to accept as many participants as possible we ask you to try to accept sharing a double room. Those who want to have a single room will have to let us know about that. Using a single room will decrease the number of possible participants.
We will give more information about how to come to Søminestationen in the third announcement that goes to all who applies to take part.
After your application is received we will also come back with more information about what you have to prepare in terms of writing and reading before we meet in September. We plan to limit the summer school to a maximum of 30 participants so do not hesitate to send your application. If we get too many applications we might need to accept partly according to date of registration.
Costs: The Nordic Graduate School will pay for the arrangements of summer school, lodging, food and the travel costs for the participants (in cheapest reasonable way).
The summer school is intended for doctoral students in mathematics education, who are taken up in a programme at a university or college in the Nordic or Baltic countries. You need to be studying actively and have a research plan that is accepted by your university/college. If we need to do a selection among applicants we are going to prefer students who have come far in their studies and study full time (or at least 80 %).
We intend to send decisions for attending the summer school end of May and we want the written document from students about their research before April 30, 2009.
