Summary of study program

The proposed Nordic master program in didactics of mathematics consists of core courses, optional courses and a research study leading to a high quality thesis.

It is a highly flexible program that offers a wide range of advanced courses and gives access to excellent supervisors that are active in research. The thesis work can be carried out in a larger research project by a student individually or with a group of students.

The program must be flexible and offer several opportunities for the students. They have very different backgrounds from different countries and different needs depending on what they are aiming for in the workforce. The master degree must be accepted in all the Nordic countries and we will plan and work for that. All legal and administrative details about this must be sorted out during the planning work. The Nordic countries have a unique situation in that a teacher education qualification from one of the countries is accepted in all the other countries. This Nordic master degree must serve the same purpose, to be of value for the educational system in all the Nordic countries. Such flexibility as we are aiming for could create master studies leading to a wider area of work positions than before. It is highly desirable that students after the degree can work in compulsory school as well as in other school forms and higher education. Students who graduate with at least 120 ECTS in mathematics (in the bachelor and master degree) have a potential for work as mathematics teachers in compulsory school and in the upper secondary level.

The program consists of 120 ECTS and can offer a thesis of 30 or 60 ECTS. The main part of the courses will be in didactics of mathematics but other kinds of courses can be included to some extent, for example in mathematics or in science education, depending on the background of the individual student. In any case the master degree will give qualifications in the area of mathematics education.
