Aim and objectives
The aim and objectives of the Nordic master program in didactics of mathematics is to make the student able to frame, analyse and discuss problems in relation to mathematics learning, education and teaching in institutional frames and take justified qualified decisions concerning planning of mathematics teaching. The students develop insights into and overview of theories in didactics of mathematics and their relation to classroom practice. They will be able to develop their own ideas and design research based analyses of problems in didactics of mathematics. They will also show independence and a deep understanding of learning processes in mathematics.
The core content will consist of a didactics of mathematics perspective on theory of science, curriculum, theories of teaching and learning mathematics, methodological issues for research in didactics of mathematics, history, traditions and justifications in the Nordic educational system of mathematics education.
The program qualifies for a master degree in didactics of mathematics and opens for a labour market in the whole Nordic educational system. Entrance qualifications to the program are a bachelor degree in mathematics plus teacher training program (PPU) and /or other bachelor degrees (e.g. from teacher education with PPU) with at least 60 ECTS in mathematics.
The program lasts for two years and each year about 30 students can be taken up in the program. This would lead to a professor/student ratio of 2/3 if professor means supervisor and /or teacher in the program.
