What is Lean Construction

Production in manufacturing industry has developed severely during the last decades, mainly according to principles often denoted as Lean Production. Particularly the Toyota production system has inspired this development. An often used slogan is to “maximize value delivered to the customer while minimizing waste”.

Construction industry has not had a parallel development towards more efficient production. The arguments against applying the same actions as in manufacturing industry are plural: constructional production is one of a kind - more like prototyping than mass production, production is managed within temporarily complexes of enterprises with individual objectives - not within a permanent governed company or in a fixed system of suppliers and customers, etc. Hence, efficient and streamlined production lines are hard to achieve.

However, there is an increasing acceptance that principles from Lean manufacturing can be utilized also in constructional industry. Lean construction is an effort to implement and adjust to construction industry, the principles of Lean production originally developed in the manufacturing industry.
