Crazy ceremonies

Mr. Lucas was the guide of group 2 in Jerebu`u, Flores. Before they left for Nggela, group 3 joined them in two traditional ceremonies.
Smoke muscle

The first ceremony was New Years Eve celebration, where people were outside dancing, singing and celebrating. Some of us joined the dancing, or at least tried. This was our first meeting with the ”jungle juice” and arak. This man had extremely big muscles, and a huge knife - it was good that he showed us his strength in singing and dancing instead of other more scary activities!

The next ceremony was in Lucas`village, where he is a Kepala Adat (traditional leader). We had some food and drinks, but the main focus was to stay conscious; the intense smoke nearly put us out! As we see, the smoke burned heavy in some of the eyes!

Mr. Lucas`s exclamation after chewing the batle nut; “What a culture!” while he shook his head has later become a well used expression in many occasions, and has also named this section;)
