Lombok is often called the ‘island of a thousand mosques’. Islam was firstly introduced in Lombok in the 16th century by a group of people from Java led by Sunan Prapen. He firstly Islamized the kings. The reason why Islam spread so quickly is that people tend to obey to their king.

The Role of Religion in Economic Development in Lombok
Islam has played a role in supporting economic development in Lombok. However, there is a problem with the Hajj (pilgrimage) because large amounts of money are leaking out of the island instead of contributing to economic growth in the region.

Inter-Religious Relations
Hindus and Muslims live peacefully together, while there are tendencies of conflicts between Christians and Muslims. This is probably because the two monotheistic religions tend to compete. The economic gap between Chinese Christians and Sasak Muslims also contributes to explaining controversies between the two groups.

The Riot 171
On January the 17th in 2000, there was a riot in Mataram. 21 churches and more than 400 houses and shops were either burned or destroyed. Fortunately nobody got killed, but more than 4000 people escaped. The riot begun after muslim leaders had held public speakings. These speaches was dedicated to Muslims in Ambon, who had a conflict with the Christians there.
