Modern institutions in Jerebu`u

The Catholic Church It was established in Jerebu’u in 1953. The church is the main social venue of Jerebu’u. During the Sunday Mass, lots of people are gathered in the church building. Before and after Mass, people participate in social activities like football, volleyball, and just talking together.

The Church Council also arranges a meeting with all the important men of Jerebu’u once a week to discuss problems in the sub-district. The Catholic Church in Jerebu’u is also a provider of other institutions that are led by the Church Council. The most important are:

Credit Union Catholic Bank (ZU/ CU) is the church-owned bank. If people can save 1 million Rupiah here, they can borrow 2 million. The bank will also provide the customer with some sort of life insurance.

PSE (Development of Social Life and Economy) is a section of the church that teaches people different handicrafts and to improve their farmer skills, to better their own personal economy.

KUB (Basic Community Group) is a group that works for the church. They help the people understand what is written in the Bible. They also have the responsibilities for the chapels out in the smaller villages.

Hospital – The one little hospital in Jerebu’u used to be Catholic, but in the mid-seventies, the government took over the hospital, and it is today public.

Schools – All kindergarten, elementary schools and high schools in Jerebu’u are Catholic, with some support from the government. The Catholic schools are not owned by the church, but by the parents of the children that attend the school. These parents are all members of the school committee. To get higher education they must travel out of the parish of Jerebu’u. The nearest senior high school is in Bajawa, 1.5 hours drive from Jerebu’u. And to get further education than senior high school, the only alternative in Flores is the priest seminary in Maumere. The nearest university is in Kupang, on an island to the east of Flores.
