The form of animisme in Indonesia shares the same form with Animism worldwide, which is a belief in certain objects, such as trees, stones or people. This belief has existed since Indonesia’s earliest history, around the first century, just before Hindu culture arrived in Indonesia. Furthermore, two thousand years later, with the existence of Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and other religions, Animism still exists in some parts of Indonesia.
However, this belief is not accepted as one of Indonesia’s official religion. The Pancasila states that to be recognized as an official religion the belief in the supreme deity, or monotheism, is necessary. Animism, on the other hand, does not believe in a particular god.
