Islam in Lombok
Islam in Lombok has a strong position, with most of Lombok’s population as its followers. Here we found that Islam and politics are closely tied together, especially because of the amount of religious leaders as active politicians. The pesantren, the Islamic boarding schools, are important educational institutions because there are too few public schools to cover the actual needs. With the generally lower score by students graduating from the pesantren, it is difficult to find them beneficial for the general development of Lombok.

Buddhism in Lombok
Balance and harmony are two words that sum up the Buddhist belief on how to live together with differences, such as religion. As the Buddhist Monk told us, cooperation is a key factor in peaceful coexistence. In the area of Tanjung , the Muslim dominance is not as strong as in most parts of Lombok. There also seemed to be more focus on tolerance between the religions in that area.

The Catholic Church
To sum up the meeting and our impression of the Catholic Church society in Praya, it seemed to be very subdued and highly aware of its position as a minority group. They focused mainly on existing, not so much on development of their community. They had a wish to maintain the fragile harmony with the Muslims and to live peacefully, even if that meant they could not express their own religion freely.
