Traditions and ceremonies
The people we spoke with attended numeral ceremonies, both traditional and Muslim, but they rarely knew exactly how many. Idul Fitri, celebrating the end of Ramadan, is the most important Muslim ceremony and holyday. Other important celebrations are weddings and funerals.
The village was lucky to have a dalang, puppet master. The dalang is the one responsible for telling the story and manipulate the puppets in a wayang golek, puppet show. The puppet shows are traditionally used for spiritual teaching and religious ceremonies.
In some cases waynag golek may also be used in political contexts. One show can last between 2 and 24 hours. The dalang in Giricahyo is one of the few who still knows how to make the wayang, and he has made all his puppets himself.
