The Society
Most of the people in this community are farmers, growing rice, bananas, coconuts, corn, and potatoes, mainly for their own use. In the 1980s the government started several programmes for developing the rural areas. To improve the productivity of the agriculture, priority was given to introducing the use of chemical fertilisers.
Important issues like infrastructure, transport, and teaching about healthy homes have been played crucial roles in village development. Education is maybe the most important way to develop the rural areas. In the village with 567 people, a huge percentage is illiterate. But even though we see education as important, most parents do not care if their children fail to attend classes. Many don’t see the benefits education can give and rather want the children to help out at home. So the local leaders work to try to change the parents’ attitudes towards education and the importance of this.
