Group 3 in Dusun Karang Wetan
His house is the headquarter for important meetings in the area, and sometimes he entertains his guests by puppet shows. He is also a puppet master, dalang. His wife Ibu Tukiran runs the household along with his mother. In the same house also live Tukirans daughter with her husband and their baby son. The house is a centre for the extended family as well and there are always new people walking in and out and sleeping there; aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces and neighbours.
Their income is mainly based on official support for the Kepala Desa, but they are also farmers, as the rest of the sub-village. Other occupations like teachers, priest, carpenters etc. does not pay enough to be the only income.
Students from Gadjah Mada University offered us company and functioned as our interpreters. We interviewed the villagers as well as our host family and followed the Friday prayer in the mosque. We also took the time to sit and watch people in daily situations and observed life in the rural district.
