During our stay in Yogyakarta province, we were able to visit an old traditional sub-village outside the busy city of Yogyakarta. This sub-village consists of 148 families, altogether 658 people. We were a group of four students living with a local family for five days. They welcomed us with open arms.
This traditional village is home to many families who preserve the old way of life despite the crowds of tourists that pass through Yogya, just an hour away. There were a married couple living in the household, but the house was always full of people. Their two children and three grandchildren practically lived there.
The feeling of community was quite strong. Together with the KKN students from Gadjah Mada University we were able to live the old traditional way of life and take part in the daily activities. The KKN students also did an amazing job working on a water project to preserve the locals with clean water.
