The village school
For the people in Wangkung, the offers for education are poor, with only one private elementary school. To continue at junior high-school school, the students have to stay in a small town approximately 1.5 hours drive away from Wangkung. Due to geographical and economic barriers, only 20% of the students who finish elementary school continue at the junior high-school level.
Catholic missionaries built the primary school in Wangkung in 1923. It was up until recently fully supported by Yaja Sun Sukma, a Catholic educational institution. Today the school gets some support from the church in Wangkung, but most of the funding they get from the government. The government employs the staff of six teachers, but the school is still classified as a private school. It has a total of 98 students divided from 1st to 6th grade.
The drop-out rate in 2005 was 4%, resulting mostly from the great distances within the village. The school has problems with the funding of equipment like books and school uniforms. The teachers are underpaid, forcing them to engage in rice cultivating on the side.
