About 3% of the population in Indonesia is Catholics. Catholicism came to Indonesia with the Portuguese, starting with the Maluku islands in 1534. During the Dutch East Indies era, the number of Roman Catholicism practitioners fell significantly. In this era Roman Catholic priests were sent to prisons or punished and replaced by protestant priests from the Netherlands. The majority of the Catholics in Indonesia currently live in Flores and Papua.
