Lombok day-by-day

Lombok, bemo 0901

January 9th
We drove to Mataram for lectures at Institute Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN). The transportation was an experience, the bemos smelled like a mix of wet dog and dead fish. But the lectures were good. We learned about the history of Islam on Lombok, the social stratification, and the cultural and religious rituals on Lombok. In the evening we checked out the different offers in the area of Senggigi, snorkelling, beach and restaurants.

January 10th
Again we headed for lectures at IAIN. The programme focused on the role of religion on economic development in Lombok.

Lombok IAIN hele gruppa 1001

For lunch, some went directly to the same restaurant as yesterday, while others were determined to try a different alternative and spent what felt like hours waltzing around Mataram. (Remember, this was at noon; the hottest time of the day.) After all the efforts, we still found ourselves dining all together in the same restaurant as yesterday. So much for trying to maximize our cultural experiences...
