Java day-by-day

January 29th

Sigbjørn and the girls
We left early to catch the plane to Surabaya. The plan was to take the train from there to Yogyakarta. But being tired of waiting and travelling we decided

Java, Traffic 2901

to rent cars instead of waiting nine hours for a shabby train that was expected to take five hours, but it was not uncommon for it to take nine hours. After some hard bargaining, we got a reasonable price for three cars with drivers. It was a memorable experience. We were in constant fear for our life during the seven hours ride. We gorged the entire content of our Norwegian food supply refusing to end our lives with only rice and chicken in our stomachs.

The Lonely Planet travel guide actually advised us to find old drivers, because they must do something right to have survived the crazy traffic for so long. Exhausted we arrived at our hotel Wisma Ananda late at night. We were too tired to go out to eat, so we just ordered some food.

Java, flight group 2901

Arne and Morten
Sigbjørn left early, and we were awoken by Arne’s friend Yngve who came from Lombok on the morning flight. We shared a cab with him as he had found a cheap hotel in the middle of Kuta, and got to the airport just in time. The flight to Yogya was very quick and comfortable, and we laughed a lot at the rest of the group that had taken the long road instead.

When we arrived at the hotel in Yogya we still had many hours before the rest

Morten Snesrud

arrived, so we walked around and got to know the area while looking for an ATM for Morten to get money for the both. Found a nice restaurant where Arne finally managed to go to the toilet for real. First time in three days! We were chilling with cold beer when the rest arrived, very satisfied with our choice of transportation. It was an early night because of the lectures the next day.
