Flores, Gr.2-3 Eating dog 1901

When you travel to South East Asia, it is almost impossible to avoid rice, it is served with every meal. But there are some things that can be hard to swallow (in both terms), and one of them is definately DOG MEAT! In Norway there is a saying that goes like this: ”A dog is a man`s best friend”. In Indonesia it is dinner...But not all Indonesians thinks it is a delicacy - the ones we had with us when this picture was taken, found it disgusting.

Arak serving

The dog meat was served to all the groups on Flores, usually followed by arak – the traditional liqour. Maybe that is a good combination; if you eat the dog first and wash it down with arak, you forget the taste of dog. If you drink the arak first, and it is a really strong one, your taste-bud`s are probably so paralyzed that they will not register the taste...But according to those who tried it out, the dog tasted somewhat like regular minced meat. The arak followed us through the whole of Flores, and surely contributed to killing bacterias in our stomachs after some suspect meals.
