ME-100 Research Methods in Social Science, or a similar subject of 10 ECTS from bachelor level is recommended.
After completing the course the student should
- have insight into the relevance of ontology and epistemology for methodological questions
- master the transition from theory to empirical research
- be able to assess and apply appropriate qualitative data, methods and methods of analysis, both in the data collection phase and in the data analysis phase
- understand issues related to methodological triangulation and ¿mixed methods¿
- be able to work with data at different levels
- have insight into the debate regarding de-colonialisation of methods
- have knowledge of the criteria for good research at an international level
- be updated on research ethics in the research process, including cross-cultural research
The objective of the course is to teach the student to develop scientifically sound research questions and to investigate the questions empirically with the use of various methods. The student should learn how to use various types of data, and to have insight into what constitutes standards for research.
Central topics:
- The relevance and implications of ontology and epistemology for empirical research and research practice
- Choice of methodology and methods
- Cross-cultural research
- Feminist perspectives and other perspectives of research
- Qualitative databases
- Qualitative methods of interview, ethnography, analysis of text and documents, natural data, visual images and media.
- Various types of analysis and ways in which they can contribute to research
- E- research or online research
- Triangulation / combination of methods
- Various ways of evaluating the quality of research, including insight into the debate on research quality
- Techniques of reference
- Research design and how to create a research report
Concentrated modules with tutorial meetings, each of two-three days duration, combining lectures, seminars and group-work. Independent problem-solving is emphasised.
Individual written assignment (counting 20%).
5-hour individual written school exam (counting 80%). Graded assessment.
Both parts must be passed in order to pass the exam.
