Upon completion of the course, the student should to be able to

  • describe the various issues and problems investigated by classical sociologists
  • describe how these issues were investigated
  • describe transitions from traditional to modern societies
  • explain sociological concepts and theories introduced by classical sociologists
  • apply classical sociological theory in the analysis of current social phenomena

The course will provide the student´s with knowledge about core ideas and analytical tools developed by classical sociologists including Marx, Weber, Durkheim.

Themes include:

  • inequality and power
  • social classes and social stratification
  • traditional and modern societies
  • understandings of society
  • action theory

Lectures, group work, and a supervised written assignment

Before entering exams students must submit a written assignment. Instruction will be made available in "Classfronter".

5 hour individual written school exam. Graded assessment.
