MAS131-G Introduction to Aeronautical Engineering

On successful completion of the course, the student should

  • have knowledge of aviation history and aeronautical terminology
  • have knowledge of how aircrafts, aircraft engines and aeroplane systems are built and their manner of operation
  • have skills in the execution of simple wind tunnel experiment
  • have insight into the basics of avionics and electrical engineering
  • be informed of the important laws and regulations in Norwegian and international aviation
  • be able to use 3D CAD system in Solid Works for generating of models and drawings
  • be able to use Solid Works for design alterations
  • be familiar with the different standards used in the mechanical industry

Aviation history, aircraft types and design aspects related to aircraft and aeroplane systems. Configuration and structural design. Classification and fundamental theory for aircraft engines. Basic aerodynamics and wind tunnel experiments. Main principles of avionics, instruments, aircraft and their behavior. Civil Aviation Authorities, law and regulations. Introduction to the use of modern CAD tools and preparation of engineering drawings with standard drawing templates. 3D modeling by use of the CAD program Solid Works. Special emphasis is placed on the use of SolidWorks as a design tools including design changes, etc.

Lectures and exercises / lab, computer lab exercises in groups.

All laboratory reports, and at least 75% of the compulsory exercises must be approved.
