Christianity, Religion and Ethics 2 (RLE 2) is an extension building on the compulsory unit of RLE 1 courses in the Teacher Education programme. The programme aims to deepen and broaden the knowledge acquired in RLE 1 in order to qualify the students for teaching religion and ethics in comprehensive school.

The Examination Regulations of the University of Agder regulate the graduation requirements for each programme of study.

Studieplanramme

Students will

- acquire knowledge of basic issues within the subject area of Christianity - such as the Bible and its reception history, the history of Christianity in Norway, diversity of views on the sacraments

- be able to describe relations between the most important religious traditions in the western world and explain the implications of religious discourse

- be familiar with main issues, basic terms and approaches of the pedagogy of religion/didactics, and the sociology and psychology of religion

- have a broad knowledge of ethics and philosophy

- be able to reflect academically and didactically on given issues

The teaching is organised as lectures, group work, project work and student presentations.

As part of the course KR-115-1 Christianity and culture all students must complete a thematically organised project focusing either on the aesthetical expressions of Christianity, or on the reception history of the Bible. Students who choose to study RLE2 in the 5th semester are required to have a two-week work placement period in which their thematic work is carried out in practice.

As part of the course KR-116-1 The multi-religious society all students must write a paper dealing with didactical issues, reflecting on cooperation with colleagues or other relevant persons. Students who study RLE2 as their 7th semester are required to carry out this work as an R&D project that includes fieldwork.

The programme may be included in the 4-year Teacher Education programme, or it may be chosen as continuing or further education for teachers. RLE1 and RLE2 total 50 ECTS credits, and qualify for admission to RLE3 (30 ECTS credits). In combination these three programmes qualify for admission to master´s programmes in religion or religious studies. Students who take RLE2 and RLE3 in the 3rd year of the Teacher Education, may start on the master´s programme in religious studies and thus obtain a master´s degree after five years of study.
