Norwegian Specialisation in Pre-school Education, One-semester Programme

Admission requirements include having received a passing grade in the obligatory Norwegian course included in the Pre-School Teacher Education Programme.
Complete course and semester schedules will be handed out at the beginning of the semester. During the programme students will work both theoretically and practically with various texts associated with the literature children read and create, including literary and media-related texts, stories which are a part of children´s own culture as well as written and oral texts composed in children´s language. Emphasis is placed on students´ acquiring a high level of both familiarity with children´s literature and confidence regarding their own abilities to present this knowledge. Oral and written linguistic stimulation (including a bilingual perspective) comprises a major portion of the programme. Students choose a topic which they wish to explore in more depth and on which they will write an individual semester assignment. A ten-day practice period is included in the programme, and is related to a project in which students gain experience in literary presentation. Excursions and study trips may also be added to the course schedule.

The Examination Regulations of the University of Agder regulate the graduation requirements for each programme of study.
Upon completion of the programme, students
will:
- be able to analyse, interpret, assess and
present texts both read and created by children

reflect upon their roles as cultural communicators

acquire knowledge about linguistic stimulation and reading
improvement with regard to first and second language
development
- be able to express themselves skilfully
in both written and oral form
Educational methods used during the programme will vary among lectures, seminars (including conversations and discussions), group work under advisement, written work, educational use of IT-based aids, a practice-oriented research and development project, group and individual presentations. Students will also complete a ten-day period of supervised practice in a daycare centre.

The advanced studies programme is first and foremost offered as a component of the Pre-School Teacher Education Programme; however, it is also suitable as a continuing education programme for certified pre-school teachers.
