Students in Teacher Education can choose Mathematics 2 (autumn) and/or Mathematics 3 (spring) in their 3rd or 4th year. Those qualified to teach in their own country can also apply for Mathematics 2 and 3.
Mathematics 3 comprises three courses, two mathematics courses and one course in mathematics education. Basic concepts and ways of thinking are emphasized in the two mathematics courses. Understanding and ability to explain and apply results are considered more imortant than getting to know more advanced mathematics. The aim of the course in mathematics education is to give the students experiences with research questions related to teaching and learning of mathematics both through literature and 2 weeks of compulsory school practice. The students will also get to know about current research projects in mathematics education in which the Institute is involved.
Arrangements for the recognition of prior learning are described in the information on the institution under "General arrangements for the recognition of prior learning (formal, informal and non-formal)".
For a description of the examination regulations, see the Examination Regulations of the University of Agder.
For information about the Norwegian grading system, see ECTS credits and grades. Specific information on grading for each course is found in the individual course descriptions.
The Examination Regulations of the University of Agder regulate the graduation requirements for each programme of study.
On successful completion of the programme, the student should be able to
- demonstrate knowledge of the central ideas, concepts, principles and working methods within the areas calculus and statistics
- plan, analyze and evaluate mathematics education based on subject knowledge and didactical insight in mathematics
Plenary lectures, group work, student presentations,
computerlab work and a research project based on school
practice. Attendence in parts of the coursework is compulsory.
There are also compulsory tasks (hand ins et cetera) in the
courses. Please see separate course
descriptions.
Practice: The students shall develop
further the pedagogical competence they have already obtained
during their teacher training so far, through planning,
carrying out and reflecting upon didactical research questions
related to school practice in mathematics. The planning part
comprises: contacting the school teachers, formulating a
research question and finding literature of current interest
for this research question. The carrying out part comprises:
Applying research methods as classroom observation and
interview, and possibly also taking charge of the teaching. The
reflecting part comprises: Interpreting the experiences from
the school practice in terms of didactical literature of
current interest, and writing a report.
There will be final examinations in all courses. Please see separate course descriptions for more information.
Completion of Mathematics 2 and 3 provides the academic basis necessary for teaching Mathematics at the primary and secondary school level. Completion of Teacher Education and Mathematics 2 and 3 qualifies students for admission to the two- year Master Programme in Mathematics Education.
The language of instruction is norwegian. Parts of the
literature can be in an other scandinavian language or
english.
From 2011/2012 the structur of Mathematics 3
vill be changed because of the new 4-year Programme in General
Teacher Education.
