General description and profile of the programme

The programme focuses on analysis of religion and/or ethics in a social context, and one makes use of both systemic-normative, historical, and empirical and social theories and methods. The programme offers flexibility and the profile of the degree is a matter of the student´s own choice, depending on what jobs or qualifications they are aiming at achieving.

The programme comprises six courses and a master´s thesis (60 ects credits) with a related course in the science of theory and method. The six courses are stipulated to one year and the masters´ thesis and related course to one year. Normally four elective courses will be offered every year.

During work with the master´s thesis students must participate in presentation seminars (see the mention for REL500 and REL407). The compulsory introduction course with speciality in scientific theory and method builds a bridge between the two academic years. Here the student will compile the project description for the master´s thesis.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the students shall

- have acquired good analytical skills

- be able to make independent academic evaluations

- be familiar with theological, religious and social-scientifical approaches to religion and be able to discuss these

- be familiar with normative and descriptive approaches to ethics, including professional ethics, and be able to discuss these

- be able to plan and accomplish an extensive research project

- be trained to present academic material to others and discuss problems on a high academic level

Assessment methods The forms of assessment vary between written examinations, oral examinations, term papers and portfolio assessments. See course descriptions for further information.

Student exchange Students who wish to take parts of their studies abroad, may do so on application. Studies abroad will normally take place in the second semester.

Occupational profiles of graduates and access to further studies The master´s degree qualifies for various work with education and analysis both in the public and private sectors. It is relevant for students who want to work as teachers, lecturers, journalists or who want to work within publishing, in the culture sector or in national or international organisations. In combination with the Postgraduate Certificate in Education it also qualifies for teaching in upper secondary school. It is possible to transfer from the programme in religious studies to the professional theology programme, and the programme qualifies for admission to PhD programmes in Norway and abroad.

Qualification awarded On completion of the course a Master´s Degree in Religion, Ethics and Society is granted.
