The programme requires applicants to have completed three years of mathematical studies at the upper secondary level.
The programme fits those students who wants a strong professional competence in mathematics and in mathematics education. Questions related to the teaching and the learning of mathematics at all school levels is treated in the programme. The history of mathematics, and its development, are also an important part of the programme.
Arrangements for the recognition of prior learning are described in the information on the institution under "General arrangements for the recognition of prior learning (formal, informal and non-formal)".

The Examination Regulations of the University of Agder regulate the graduation requirements for each programme of study.
On successful completion of the programme, the student should be able to
- apply theoretical and practical knowledge in mathematics and mathematics education in practice
- develop their own ideas and implement a research based analysis of problems in mathematics education
- consistently evaluate own learning and identify learning needs
- communicate ideas, problems and solutions to both specialists and non-specialists
- developed a coherent and rational set of personal values relating the social, scientific and ethical questions that arise in education.
- show knowledge and competence to teach a second school subject
Instruction is comprised of lectures, seminars,
group work and tutorials.
The first year of the
programme contains of a 1-year programme in mathematics. The
second year comprises a second school subject (60 credits).
School practice is an integral part of the third
year.
Research assignments comprise the most important
element of coursework during the fourth and fifth years, most
of which are completed in English. In some courses students
work on essays and more broadbased projects. The students work
individually on the master's thesis under the supervision of a
tutor. Most lectures and professional seminars have compulsory
attendance. Please see separate course

Assessment is based upon final written and oral examinations, and project report. There will be final examinations in all courses. Please see separate course descriptions for more information.
In the second year of the programme there are possblities for studying abroad.
Before the students can start in third year they have to pass all exams in first and second year.
The Master programme in Mathematics Education provides students with the academic foundation necessary for teaching mathematics at all school levels, from the primary up to and including the upper secondary level. It also qualifies graduates for teaching mathematics at colleges and universities.

A certificate of good conduct must be submited the
first week of the study.
Before the student starts to
work on the masterthesis, a contract is made with respect to

Subjects
that is coincident with the subjects for those with a bachelor
bakground in the 2-year master kan be offered in
english.
