Higher Education Entrance Qualification
The One-year Programme in History consists of six courses, four overview courses and two specialization courses which in combination cover Norwegian and world history. The overview courses deal with the long lines in history. The specialization courses allow more thorough studies of more limited fields, both in time and space. The programme also teaches historical method.
Arrangements for the recognition of prior learning are described in the information on the institution under "General arrangements for the recognition of prior learning (formal, informal and non-formal)".
For a description of the examination regulations, see the Examination Regulations of the University of Agder.
For information about the Norwegian grading system, see ECTS credits and grades. Specific information on grading for each course is found in the individual course descriptions.
The Examination Regulations of the University of Agder regulate the graduation requirements for each programme of study.
Students will acquire
- a basic overview of
Norwegian and world history up till today
- an insight
into and a comprehension of economic, political and cultural
development, from a local, national and international
perspective
- an understanding of different social
systems and aspects of development in European as well as
non-European countries
- a knowledge of the main
principles in historical method and an understanding of basic
didactical questions related to the subject area
Two overview courses and at least one specialization course will be given each semester. Within certain periods the specialization courses may vary from semester to semester. Each course is a separate unit with a defined syllabus. Variation in teaching methods and assessment is emphasized. Instruction is given as lectures, seminars and individual tuition.
Assessment forms are written examinations, oral
examinations and term papers / portfolio
assessment.
Early in the semester there are
preliminary tests in the four overview courses. The tests must
be assesses as a Pass before students can take the
examination.
The programme gives access to the Bachelor´s programme in history and can be part of an unspecified bachelor's degree or as the minor subject of other, specified BA programmes at the University of Agder, as well as the fourth year in teacher education studies. In combination with the Postgraduate Certificate in Education the programme qualifies to teach on lower and upper secondary school levels. It qualifies for advanced programmes in history and for a number of positions (for more details, see the BA programme).
