Doctoral Programme in Linguistics

Master degree in linguistics or in an equivalent field. Students with an international master degree may also be eligible to admit to the programme, without any demand of being proficient in Norwegian or any other of the Scandinavian languages.
The programme aims to develop the students´
qualifications in research and scientific work within the
subject linguistics. The programme will give students a high
level of both theoretical insight and methodological awareness
and bring them to the frontline research in their field. The
programme consists of an independent research work and a
training component. The independent research will be carried
out under supervision in order to ensure quality and
actuality.
The training component aims to give
students an in depth aspect in the PhD programme based on the
courses, both theoretically and methodically. Students will
during courses, seminars and conferences familiarize themselves
with scientific thinking and practice based on current and
problem-oriented research.
The programme is a 3-year
programme of 180 ECTS credits. The training component consists
of minimum 30 ECTS credits of ½ year duration and runs parallel
to the independent research work. PhD courses will be given on
a regular basis and according to the students´
requirement.

The Examination Regulations of the University of Agder regulate the graduation requirements for each programme of study.
On sucessful completion of the programme,
the student should
- be able to carry out an
independent research on an international PhD level
-
be a qualified scholar able to complete projects, supervise and
participate in the general research
discussion.
Independent research, lectures, seminars, discussions and presentations.
Passed course participation will be assessed by the course responsible, who will hand out a course diploma. The total training component will be assessed by the PhD-committee after a recommendation from the supervisor.
The doctoral dissertation will be assessed by a commission composed according to the university´s regulations.
