Learning outcomes

The expected level of competence in clinical studies will depend on the year of attendance. Please refer to the students' learning management system Fronter for guidelines.

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• plan, carry out and verify nursing to various groups of patients in the homebased services
• perform practical nursing procedures in a quality-assured manner
• use hygienic principles when nursing
• participate in continuous observation of patients who are entitled to an individual plan
• perform nursing in acute situations
• cooperate with own and other professional groups
• guide and instruct student colleagues, patients and relatives
• conduct nursing to groups
• handle situations where crisis, grief and death are involved
• show an understanding for patients' experiences and reactions to illness and treatment and be considerate of patients' and relatives' rights regarding information and participation
• handle medication and observe its effects and side effects in order to secure safe medical treatment
• acquire knowledge of and be able to use information technology as a tool in practising nursing
• reflect upon own professional development and progression
• reflect on ethical and professional dilemmas related to practising nursing at home
• reflect upon problems related to experience-based practical training in preventative health services, pregnancy and post-natal care and paediatric nursing (applies to all first and second year students as from the academic year 2009/10)
• use current literature and the latest research findings in order to evaluate and justify actions and skills
• have critical and analytical abilities when practising the profession

Course contents

ECTS credits distribution based on the National Curriculum:

• Nursing functions and tasks in community health services 11 credits
• Anatomy, physiology and biochemistry 1 credit
• Microbiology, infectious diseases and hygiene 0.5 credits
• Ethics 0.5 credit
• Psycology and education 0.5 credit
• Sociology and social anthropology 0.5 credit
• Governmental and municipal knowledge, health and social policy 1 credit

1.5 of the listed credits are related to preparing practice/reflection notes on practice and 13.5 credits are related to clinical studies in cooperation with patients and their relatives.

Students will study and practise nursing in the community health services on patients with different somatic diseases. Students will acquire skills, knowledge and beliefs related to the nurse's role and responsibility when nursing at home.

Teaching methods

Compulsory participation in experience-based practical training. *
Nine weeks supervised clinical studies in cooperation with patients/relatives. Compulsory attendance in all clinical studies (90%). For more details about teaching- and working methods please refer to the students' learning management system Fronter.

* Applies to all first and second year students as from the academic year 2009/10.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment of clinical studies is pass / fail (please refer to section five in the regulations of the National Curriculum). In order to pass the clinical studies students must be able to document a minimum of 90% attendance rate, participated in experience-based practical training* in the fourth semester (related to preventative health services, pregnancy and post-natal care and paediatric nursing) and have the following course reguirements approved:

• an assignment related to documentation of nursing
• reflection notes of which one is related to professional ethics
• reflection groups
• presentation of clinics
• participation in first-aid training if course is attended in fourth semester

Requirements related to clinical studies, assignment related to documentation of nursing patients at home, reflection notes, clinics, as well as participation in first-aid training are further described in the students´ learning management system Fronter.

The student´s period of clinical studies is assessed according to a prescribed assessment form. The expected level of skills in each area appears in detail in the assessment form for each period of clinical studies.
