Calculation
The expected level of competence in clinical studies will depend on the year of attendance. Please refer to the students' learning management system Fronter for guidelines.
On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- plan, carry out and verify nursing to various groups of patients
- perform practical nursing procedures in a quality-assured manner
- use hygienic principles when nursing
- perform nursing in acute situations
- cooperate with own and other professional groups
- guide and instruct student colleagues, patients and their relatives
- conduct nursing to groups
- handle situations where crisis, grief and death are involved
- show an understanding for patients' experiences and reactions to illness and treatment and be considerate of patients' and relatives' rights regarding information and participation
- handle medication and observe its effects and side effects in order to secure safe medical treatment
- acquire knowledge of and be able to use information technology as a tool in practising nursing
- reflect upon own professional development and progression
- reflect upon ethical and professional dilemmas related to practising nursing in specialist health services
- reflect upon problems related to experience-based practical training in preventative health services, pregnancy and post-natal care and paediatric nursing when included in SYP203
- use current literature and the latest research findings in order to evaluate and justify actions and skills
- have critical and analytical abilities when practising the profession
ECTS credits distribution based on the National Curriculum:
- Nursing functions and tasks in specialised health services 19 credits
- Anatomy, physiology and biochemistry 1 credit
- Microbiology, infectious diseases and hygiene 1.5 credits
- General pathology, diseases and pharmacology 4 credits
- Ethics 1 credit
- Psycology and education 1 credit
- Nursing history, tradition and professional ethics 1 credit
- Sociology and social anthropology 0.5 credit
- Governmental and municipal knowledge, health and social policy 1 credit
Three of the listed credits are related to preparing practice/reflection notes on practice and 27 credits are related to clinical studies in cooperation with patients and their relatives.
Students will study and practise nursing on patients with different somatic diseases. Students will acquire skills, knowledge and beliefs related to the nurse's role and responsibility within specialised health services.
18 weeks (12 + 6 weeks) supervised clinical studies in cooperation with patients and their relatives. Students with 12 weeks clinical studies in a operating theatre will have 6 weeks clinical studies in a medical ward. Students with 12 weeks clinical studies in a medical ward will have 6 weeks clinical studies in a operating theatre. Compulsory attendance requirement (90 %) in clinical studies. The examination consists of two parts:
- part one: 12 weeks clinical studies
- part two: 6 weeks clinical studies
Assessment of clinical studies is pass / fail (please refer to section five in the regulations of the National Curriculum). Both parts must be assessed as a pass in order to pass the examination in SYP203. Additionally, the student must have participated in first-aid training if course is attended in fourth semester.
Requirements for passing part one:
- the student must have documented a minimum of 90% attendance rate in clinical studies
- approval of the following work requirements:
- problem-based project
- reflection note
- reflection groups
- presentation of clinic

Requirements related to clinical studies, problem-based project, reflection notes, reflection groups and clinics, as well as participation in first-aid training or experience-based practical training, are further described in the students´ learning management system Fronter.
The student´s period of clinical studies is assessed according to a prescribed assessment form. The expected level of skills in each area appears in detail in the assessment form for each period of clinical studies.
