Learning outcomes

The student will acquire knowledge and understanding for how to nurse acutely and/or chronically ill patients. The student will be prepared for and reflect upon nursing practice in the specialised and the community health services.

After having completed the course, the student will be able to:

• identify and consider the need of nursing to patients who are acutely and/or chronically ill
• explain how to observe, consider, plan, implement and verify nursing
• discuss how various diseases and mental illnesses can influence on circumstances of life, health and comfort
• explain the patients' need of nutrition by various diseases
• explain nursing in acute situations and by first-aid
• explain palliative treatment and care for the dying
• make use of the latest literature within the field and literature on research

Course contents

ECTS credits distribution based on the National Curriculum:

• Nursing's function and tasks in the specialised health services 10 credits
• Nursing's function and tasks in the community health services 4 credits
• Nursing's history, tradition and professional ethics 1 credit

• Common Cardiovascular Disorders
• Common Respiratory Disorders
• Common Gastrointestinal Disorders
• Common Endocrine Disorders
• Common Renal Failures and Urinary disease
• Dermatoses and wounds
• Nervus, muscle and skeleton disease
• Head Injury
• Cancer
• Gynaecological disease

Mental health care:

• nursing of various mental disorders
• problemsolving and ability to successfully meet challenges
• encountering persons who are potentially suicidal
• chemical dependency and mental health
• user influence and interdisciplinary collaboration

Pre, per and postoperative nursing.

Nursing patients in pain

Nursing patients at home

Teaching methods Lectures, supervised group work, compulsory skills training. Instruction will alternate between lectures and student active approaches. Please consult the students' learning management system Fronter (course SY-201) for details.

Examination requirement

• Approved oApproved oral presentation of group assignment
• Participated at compulsory skills instruction
• Completed skills training
• Compulsory supervisning/instruction

A minimum of 80 % group work attendance is required. Each group selects a student to take register for each meeting. In special cases, if a student should not participate satisfactorily in group assignments, a decision of the candidate´s resignation from the examination can be made by the university in agreement with the Head of Department.
