ST-401-1 History, Institutions and Policies of the European Integration

None, but insofar as all literature and teaching is in English, knowledge of this language is a prerequisite.
After the course the students should know the basic history of European integration and the development of the European Union from 1945 to the present theories of European integration and the concepts intergovernmental and supranational challenges a more democratic and politicised EU will face in the years to come.
This course aims at providing students with a problem-oriented introduction to the economic, judicial and political processes which has resulted in the structure of today´s European co-operation, as well as a thorough introduction to the structure and functions of the European Union, that is, its polity, politics and policies.
Topics include
- From economic community to political union in Europe Between inter- and supragovernmentalism in Europe
- Polity and politics of the European Union
- Policy-making in the European Union
The course is offered during summer and will be based on ordinary lectures (30 h.) and working groups (16 h.). The students are expected to take active part, and will be asked to deliver short presentations. The working language is English.
Approved required paper (maximum 1200 words).
6-hours written exam with graded assessment.
