Learning outcomes Having completed the course the students should
- be able to comprehend and critically evaluate the day-care centre as an organisation
- have knowledge about professional management and development of qualification
- have knowledge about and be able to reflect on the significance of parental collaboration
- be able to explain the importance of inclusion in the day-care centre

Course contents The course has 6 topics:
Topic: Communication, collaboration and management
- Staff management
- Roles and conflict resolution
- Counselling
Topic: Development of the day-care centre as organisation
- Educational documentation
- Educational development work
Topic: Parental collaboration
- Communication and interaction
- Parental contribution
Topic: Children with special needs
- The field in special needs education
- Children in risk-group
Topic: The multicultural society
- Children with multicultural background
- The role of the day-care centre in a multicultural society
Topic: Early Primary school
- Primary school - goal, tradition and comprehension of learning
- Day-care centre - School
- The arrangement for children to be under supervision at school after school hours

Teaching methods Lectures, groupworks and self-study.
Through the completion of assignments and practice in groups, students will be challenged on their own leadership styles, communicative skills and abilities to discuss professional ethical situations. Students will work with various approaches connected with the course´s themes. Working methods used may include role playing, colleague guidance, use of video, problem based learning and project work. Use of IT will be continued in this course as an active tool for communication and learning.
A 6-weeks mandatory practice in day-care centre and in early primary school during autumn and spring semester, is included.
An interdisciplinary project in each semester is also included.

Examination requirement Project and practise must be passed.
Mandatory assignments and instruction must be accomplished.

Assessment methods and criteria An individual written at-home (2 days) examination. Differentiated grade.
