Preliminary Course for Engineers

After completing the course, the student is expected to:

  • master the Norwegian language and communication to the extent that is necessary in an engineering study programme (for students with knowledge and experience in Norwegian beforehand)
  • have knowledge about the communication process and know what the criterions for good communication are
  • have skills to use the language as a tool to written and oral communication in different situations

Basic education in Norwegian (hovedmål). Text and sentence construction, punctuation and spelling. Training in use of dictionaries, reference books and Internet search, critical evaluation of sources. Target and recipient analysis. Applications and CV, reports, popularization of technical literature, written and oral presentations. Argumentation analysis and rhetoric. Meetings: call in, organisation, minutes of meeting. Conversations and discussions about topics of current interest.

Lectures and exercises. The lessons are co-ordinated with EN-003 English Language and Communication.

Satisfactory submission of compulsory exercises and one (1) oral presentation.

Written examination, 5 hours (60 % contribution to final mark) and portfolio (40 % contribution to final mark). Graded mark. The portfolio must be assessed to Pass to take the written examination.
