ME-106-G Scientific Theory, Ethics and Governmental- and Municipal Knowledge

Norwegian.
On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- outline in simple terms various views of reality, people and knowledge as well as give an account of major scientific-philosophical movements
- describe the steps involved in the research process and various scientific methods
- look up and read research reports
- give an account of various ethical movements and theories, and apply an ethical reflection model to a theoretical problem
- give an account of the ethical and legal basis for confidentiality requirements
- describe the welfare state's structure, organisation, services and relevant laws
- give an account of health problems in the general population and what is meant by having a public health perspective
ECTS credits distribution based on the National Curriculum:
- Scientific Theory and Research Methods: 3 ECTS credits
- Ethics: 4 ECTS credits
- Local/National Government, Health and Social Policy: 3 ECTS credits
The course will give students an insight into basic philosophical and ethical problems which comprise part of the background for scientific work in health and social science subjects. It will also give students an insight into the welfare state's organisation and structure.
Topics:
- Views of reality, people, knowledge and values
- Major movements within scientific philosophy: Hermeneutics, positivism and critical theory
- Introduction to the research process and various research methods, with major emphasis on qualitative methods
- Introduction to various ethical movements, theories and principles
- Ethical reflection model
- Confidentiality requirements ethical and legal consequences and justification
- The welfare state's structure and organisation
- Health problems in the general population, with focus on the public health perspective
- Introduction to health services and professions
- Health legislation at the community level
Lectures and study groups. Compulsory attendance is required at lectures regarding confidentiality requirements.
Approved attendance at compulsory instruction.

The students must meet the attendance requirements for compulsory instruction as described in the students´ learning management system Fronter (course ME-106-G), or complete an alternative course requirement.
A graded 4-hour written individual examination.
