Admission requirements Students in Teacher Education can choose Natural Sciences 1 in their 3rd or 4th year. Those qualified to teach in their own country can also apply for Natural Sciences 1.

General description and profile of the programme The Half-Year Programme in Natural Sciences 1 encompasses three interconnected fields: subject knowledge and didactic knowledge being a natural sciences teacher cooperation and reflection Through their work in these fields, the students shall acquire theoretical and practical competences in the natural sciences in order to become good natural sciences teachers who are able to bring the subject alive, and hopefully support interest and enthusiasm for the subject among the pupils. The students shall be able to assess and renew their own teaching in cooperation with other stakeholders in the school system. The structure of the study programme is described below, with a table showing the structure of the study plan. In the table, some of the course names have been abbreviated, or are only given as a course code. For more information, please see the description of each individual course.

Learning outcomes Students shall be able to discuss and explain selected central concepts and phenomena in the natural sciences, primarily with a view to teaching in primary and lower secondary schools discuss and try out different approaches to didactic problems in their own teaching

Teaching methods Laboratory-, field work and outdoor activities constitute half of the teaching and is mandatory, the rest is either lectures or individual supervision. A field session prepared and guided by the students as a group work is mandatory. A specimen collection is presented individually and is evaluated and given differentiated marks. Obligatory practice period in primary school is part of the course.

Assessment methods There will be final examinations in all courses. Please see separate course descriptions for more information. The programme includes compulsory work such as assignments and project work. Practical training is compulsory for students in the third year of the teacher education programme.

Occupational profiles of graduates and access to further studies Completion of the programme provides graduates with the academic basis necessary for teaching natural sciences in the primary and secondary school.
