Higher Education Entrance Qualification.
Knowledge of English language equivalent to English as main subject in upper secondary school is recommended as previous knowledge.
The programme aims to provide broad knowledge of English literature and language seen in a cultural context. The students will work with various text genres in order to train their skills in analysing literary/cultural and linguistic issues. The programme aims to train the students´ written and oral skills. It comprises four compulsory courses and one elective course. The four compulsory courses cover central areas within the subject of English: grammer, phonetics, British and American culture and literature.

The Examination Regulations of the University of Agder regulate the graduation requirements for each programme of study.
On completion of the programme students are expected to - have acquired a broad knowledge of the English language and its various forms of expression - be able to show insight into English literature and culture - be familiar with literary genres and epochs - show insight into cultural aspects, mainly by studying, analysing and discussing different texts - master English grammar and usage in practical contexts
Through contact hours and group work students are expected to improve their English skills and further develop their analytical capabilities, and through self-study improve their ability to work independently. Students will be expected to give written and oral presentations. Supervision is provided and students are expected to participate actively in groups and with written work and presentations. There are compulsory attendance requirements to parts of the programme. See course descriptions.
The programme qualifies for admission to the advanced programme which is required for continuing on to master's level.
Graduates may find a profession in teaching (in combination with practical-didactical programme), mass media, culture work, public relations, tourism, executive work in the public and private sectors, publishing, or international and intercultural work.
The faculty has a longstanding agreement with the Norwegian Study Centre in York, England. A two weeks´ stay in York may be included in the programme in the spring.
