After having completed the course, students will be able to: consider societal circumstances which influence contraction of disease as well as the public´s health and well-being discuss the connection between individuals´ social and cultural backgrounds and their choices, actions and lifestyles discuss cultural expressions and comprehension of health and disease consideration of nursing for people with various cultural backgrounds explain development of quality, quality assurance and internal monitoring in the healthcare sector discuss various problems related to healthcare politics discuss how groups of users and nurses can influence health and social policy explain the organisation, management and interdisciplinary collaboration in the Norwegian healthcare and social services assess problems related to the use of information technology in healthcare and social services explain health-promoting and disease-preventative nursing make use of current professional literature and research literature within the field

Credit distribution: The function of nursing and community healthcare services 4 credits History of nursing, tradition and professional ethics 1 credit Sociology and social-anthropology 3 credits Governmental- and municipal knowledge, health and social politics 2 credits In this course students will learn about health-promoting and preventative nursing, seeing the individual as part of a bigger group or culture, including a social perspective. Focus is directed towards organisation of management and decision-making processes in healthcare and social services. Topics: Public health in the social perspective Sociology Social-anthropology Governmental- and municipal knowledge, health and social politics Organisation and management Information and communication technology in health and social services The nurse´s health promoting and preventative function Habilitation and rehabilitation

Instruction will alternate between lectures and student active approaches. Study groups are compulsory. Please refer to the students' learning management system Fronter (course SY-301) for details about teaching- and working methods.

Approved oral presentation. A minimum of 80 % group work attendance is required. Each group selects a student to take register for each meeting. In special cases, if a student should not participate satisfactorily in group assignments, a decision of the candidate´s resignation from the examination can be made by the university in agreement with the Head of Department.
