After having completed the course, students will be able to: describe the history of nursing, its traditions and areas of responsibility explain how various views of nursing can influence nursing practice give an account of human beings basic needs give an account of how one observes, assesses, plans, executes, evaluates and documents nursing care give an account of nursing for elderly patients and nursing for persons with dementia give an account of basic nursing care for people at the close of life apply qualitative research methods in a project

ECTS credits distribution based on the National Curriculum: Area of activities and responsibilities of nursing in community health services: 3.5 ECTS credits History, traditions and professional ethics with regard to nursing: 2.5 ECTS credits Scientific-theoretical basis of nursing, research and development with regard to nursing: 1.5 ECTS credits Area of activities and responsibilities of nursing in specialised health services: 1.0 ECTS credits Communication, interaction and conflict management: 0.5 ECTS credits Governmental- and Municipal knowledge: 0.5 ECTS credits Psychology and education: 0.5 ECTS credits Of these 5 ECTS credits are related to preparation/reflection regarding work experience. The course will make the students acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of what characterises the nursing profession, as well as preparing themselves for reflection regarding nursing practice. Topics: History and traditions of nursing Nursing as subject and profession Central concepts and theories in nursing Nursing in relation to basic needs The nursing process and nursing documentation Nursing for the elderly and nursing for persons with dementia Nursing for giving people a dignified death

Lectures, supervised group work and project. Instruction will alternate between lectures and student active approaches. Parts of the instruction, and group work related to examination are compulsory. For more details please consult the students' learning management system Fronter (course SY-101).

Two approved situation descriptions. For more details please consult the students' learning management system Fronter (course SY-101). Approved attendance at compulsory instruction related to the examination as described in the students' learning management system Fronter (course SY-101). A minimum of 80 % group work attendance related to one of the situation descriptions and group work related to the examination (clinical studies project) is required. Each group selects a student to take register for each meeting. In special cases, if a student should not participate satisfactorily in group assignments, a decision of the candidate´s resignation from the examination can be made by the university in agreement with the Head of Department.

A group project based on clinical studies in which knowledge related to the course SY-101 Nursing 1 will be applied and related to public health, and/or topics related to the course description. Qualitative methods should be used. The project will be graded. For more details please consult the students' learning management system Fronter (course SY-101).
