Learning outcomes After the course the students should be able to gained knowledge about mathematics. gained insight into how children experience and explore numbers, counting, space, and figure, as well as be able to continue and further develop this in their pedagogical work developed concepts and attitudes that are based on new research into mathematics education.

Course contents The content of the course is concentrated around the issues number, space, and figure. Through a focus on how children learn mathematics in the kindergarten as well as through practical work with tasks and activities related to the kindergarten, the students are going to experience how children explore and make experience with numbers and counting, space and figure. The course aims at giving the students tools to collaborate with children at their level, and experience how children argue mathematically and make themselves mathematical connections through playing, experimenting, and activities. How children develop mathematical concepts and language will be emphasised in the course. These issues are discussed from the perspective of how pre-school teachers may plan, carry out, and reflect on children´s mathematical learning. A central issue in the course is also a focus on how to prepare the children for mathematics in school.

Teaching methods Lectures, seminars, group work, and obligatory assignments. In addition there will be a project connected to pre-school or elementary school, related to mathematics only or mathematics related to other subjects.

Examination requirement All compulsory assignments must have obtained a Pass.

Assessment methods and criteria A 4-hour written examination. Differentiated grades.
