IS-100-1 Information Systems

Bachelor's Programme in IT and Information Systems , Bachelor's Programme in Political Science , IT and Information Systems, 1-year Programme

Norwegian.

The students will develop an understanding of what an Information System (IS) is, what the challenges with development of an IS are, and which role IS have in society today. The students will also acquire an understanding of the technology IS are built upon. Students will learn to develop small Information systems, for example an web application. See also Teaching methods.

The following topics are emphasized: Various forms of information systems The components of an information system System development methods The most important hardware componants Various programming languages Web-development Programming Databases Legislation and ethical dilemmas, such as privacy protection and copyright The course will to a certain extent be integrated with IS-104 and IS-107, which are taught in the same semester.

Through theory and practical assignments students will develop an understanding of Information systems, see the links between the different themes in the course and through this develop a professional understanding and a platform for further studies in IT. Through practical work with development of web pages and use of databases on the web, students will obtain experience and understanding of the challenges in development of Information systems. For the time being php and mysql and HTML-editor is used as tool for programming, databases and web-development. There are mandatory assignments. The course will in some parts be integrated with IS-104 and IS-107 that are taught in the same semester. The average work load is typically 4 hours of lectures and up to 4 hours of organised practical assignments (PC-lab) per week.Mandatory attendance at certain lectures. A few lectures may be given as work intensive seminars over some consecutive days.

Portfolio assessment comprising 50 % and a 4-hour written, individual examination comprising 50 % of the final grade. All portfolio assessments and the final examination must be passed. The assignments in the portfolio will be partly be individual and partly in groups. Obligatory assignments approved in previous course sessions are not automatically valid in current course session.
